Load sharing between 6509 and an Extreme 400-48

We have a temporary requirement at a customer to set up load sharing between the above two devices, whilst they migrate to Cisco. We have two 1Gig ports channelled at the Cisco end, and with sharing enabled on the Extreme end. However, we are seeing data acting in a full-duplex manner, with traffic going down one link and up the other - not true load balancing.

Has enybody had any dealings with this type of scenario, and managed to get true load sharing across member-ports?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Shaun,

The following document should help:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/customer/473/4.html

Depending on the platform, the load-sharing decision is based on a permutation of source and/or destination mac address, ip address and TCP/UDP ports. If the traffic itself is uniform in these fields, then the traffic will be hashed to the same link in the bundle.

The Cisco switch will only make a hashing decision for egress traffic, and the Extreme switch will perform a similar hash for it's egress traffic only.

HTH,

Bobby
