Hello,

Lately I saw error message in log on Cat6509 with Sup720 switch:

%SYSTEM_CONTROLLER-SP-3-EXCESSIVE_RESET: System Controller is getting reset so frequently

Have anybody any idea what it might be about? Cannot find anything about it either on TAC online tooling or internet.

the SYSTEM_CONTROLLER facility succeeds the MISTRAL facility.

the SP in the errorCode between CONTROLLER and the severityLevel means that this message is coming from the MISTRAL ASIC on the supervisorEngine.

no SP between CONTROLLER and the severityLevel means the message is coming from the MISTRAL ASIC on the MSFC.

usually the system_controller is reset to do internal errors.

check logging to see if you have any more system_controller messages, specifically PARITY_ERROR type of message which are the most common.

use the BUGTOOLKIT, http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/Support/Bugtool/launch_bugtool.pl, to see if you can find the symptom as a known bug. (cco account required)

Are you seeing the message frequently? %SYSTEM_CONTROLLER-SP-3-EXCESSIVE_RESET: System Controller is getting reset so frequently

The meaning of the error messages is that the controller (Mistral ASIC) is getting reseted so frequently, most of the time this is due to HW related problems. To verify and confirm, try looking at teh ibc counters:

remote command switch show ibc >> Look for ibc reset and MISTRAL ERROR counters. If they are incrementing most likely a hardware issue. If it's Mistral defect a re-seat would not correct it but it would confirm hardware issue, after capturing the show ibc from the SP, go back to RP and set the diagnostic level to complete and re-seat the sup. show diagnostic to see and confirm any conponent failure.

Thanks for information. I will be looking at the logs to see if that happens again.
