Are Cat-5 patch cables OK for Gbit (assuming that they have all 4 pairs cabled, of course), or do I need to buy some Cat-7? I know that Gbit uses the same clock rate as 100 Mbps, so I would have thought that Cat-5 would do. Can anyone tell me differently, or point me to a doc?

Hi Kevin,
Looks like there will be some problems if CAT5 is used for Gigabit, as the electrical specifications for Cat5 cables are designed keeping 100 mbps transfer rate.
Cat5E is the one which is designed for gigabit transfer rate.
Have a look at these URLs,

Im not sure about Cat-7, but it looks like it will be using a different connector, than the standard RJ-45.
So, it would be better to go for Cat5E or Cat 6 for your setup.
