Assistance choosing a switch

I'm looking for a 100/1000 48 port switch with a GBIC SFP module for the uplink... Any recommendations on a particular model. I don't need it to do any sort of vlans or routing.

Depending on your budget, you have a number of choices:

- Cat 2960G 48 TC-L (WS-C2960G-48TC-L) - 44x 10/100/1000 copper + 4 dual-purpose ports (each dual-purpose port has 1x 10/100/1000 and 1x SFP, only 1 can be active at one time)

- Cat 3560G - 48x 10/100/1000 + 4 SFP. Comes in 2 models: WS-C3560G-48TS (non-PoE) or WS-C3560G-48PS (PoE)

- Cat 3750G - Similar to Cat 3560Gs. Also comes in 2 models: WS-C3750G-48TS (non-PoE) or WS-C3750G-48PS (PoE). This switch family is stackable, up to 8 switches, with 32Gbps stacking backplane.

- Cat 4948 - 44x 10/100/1000 copper + 4 dual-purpose like Cat2960G above. Comes in two models: WS-C4948-S (basic layer-3) or WS-C4948-E (enhanced layer-3). Supports dual power supplies, but no PoE capability.

Starting from Cat 3560 upwards, all switches come with basic Layer-3 IOS (static routing, RIP), which allows you to enable inter-VLAN routing in the future, should the need arise. With additional cost, you can upgrade all these to enhanced layer-3 that will give you all dynamic routing protocols (EIGRP, OSPF, BGP).

i recon the best choice would be 3750G.....as u can see in above post i recon u would understand that it has two models.....so if u need any IP phones or some other devices (or in future)......u shd go for 3750G (PoE).......cheers......P.S rate all posts

The problem with stacking is you'd end up over-subscribing the fabric. Now, it may not be a big issue for most data traffic, but if you're deploying IP Tel, configuring QoS on the switch would be more challenging. In contrast, if you use non-stackable, fixed configuration switches (e.g. Cat 3560 PoE), when deploying IP Tel. you only need to worry about QoS configurations on the access and uplink ports.

Another potential issue with stacking (may or may not apply in your case) is Layer-3 convergence issue that we encountered in our test of the 3750 platform. Rather than taking seconds for the dynamic routing protocol to converge, it took minutes. That's unacceptable to us.

Just my 2cents.

It seems that you want a switch just for connectivity purpose. If you are sure that you do not need any other features I guess 2960-48-TC-L is a good choice as suggested above.
