We're trying to send a signal from our OC48 LR 1550 card through an 15216-EDFA3 to another site approx 70 miles away. Will the amplifier work with this card? And will it have enough power at the end assuming the signal is clean going in?

Yes the 1550 card is compatable; just remember by default the EDFA3 max input is -4dBm, so padding may be necessary.

If your link is 70 miles, thats approx 113KM, and at .25dB loss per KM thats 28.25 dB of loss.

The EDFA3 has 21 dB of gain at the standard gain setting, so -4 + 21 = +17dBm; +17 + (-28.25) = -11.25dBm receive level. This should would fine.

I am assuming 1 channel only and using the average figure of .25 dB of loss in the fiber per KM. You mileage may vary. Please get the actual loss of the fiber to make sure.

Have fun!
