10gbe to 1gbe compatability

I was wondering if I can connect a 10gbe fiber interface to a 1gbe interface, or are they not compatible?

Not,

There is no AUTO/AUTO option on the 10GE fiber interfaces I've seen. 10GE is 10GE/FULL only. Same for 1GE SFPs and GBICs except they are 1GE/FULL.
