Core Issue

Only one WIC-1ENET card is supported in all versions of Cisco IOS  Software Release 12.1, and 12.2 versions earlier than 12.2(2)XJ, 12.2(2)XK and 12.2(8)T. To work, the WIC-1ENET card must be installed in slot0. An error message is displayed when the router is running on one of the earlier Cisco IOS Software Release versions. In this case, the WIC-1ENET card will not function.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, perform these steps:

  1. Verify that the Cisco IOS Software Release version on the router supports the WAN Interface Card (WIC) being installed in slots other than slot0. Issue the show version command.

This is the output of the show version command:

    1750#show version

32K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory.
8192K bytes of processor board System Flash (Read/Write)

In this example, the Cisco IOS Software Release version is 12.1(3)XT1. Therefore, the router supports only one WIC-1ENET card, and it must be installed in slot0.

  2. Upgrade the Cisco IOS Software to a version that supports the router having the WIC-1ENET card in other slots and allows the use of two WIC-1ENET cards. This functionality is available in Cisco IOS Software Release versions 12.2(2)XJ, 12.2(2)XK, 12.2(8)T and later.
