Core Issue
This message may occur during bootup, yet after the full Cisco IOS Software image is loaded, the port adapter is recognized and functioning properly.
This usually occurs because the the boot image is at a version level which does not support the port adapter, while the full Cisco IOS image is at a version level which does support the port adapter. This does not hinder the router's performance in any way while the router is up and running the full Cisco IOS version. If the router is in boot mode, however, the port adapter will not be available.
Resolution
To eliminate the bootup message, perform these steps:
- Identify the port adapter by issuing the show diag command. This determines which port adapter is in the bay (slot), which is referenced by the error message.
If the error message is %PA-2-UNDEFPA: Undefined Port Adapter type 549 in bay 3, the port adapter shows up in slot 3 in the show diag output, as shown:

- Identify the version of the boot image by issuing the show version command, as shown:

- Once the hardware and current boot image have been identified, refer to the Software Support for Hardware section of the Software Advisor. This determines the minimum software version requirements for the port adapter.
- Upgrade the boot image to the same version level as the main Cisco IOS image by referring to the Upgrading the Boot Helper Image section of Preparing for Installation.
While matching the versions is not critical, it may eliminate other informational messages at bootup, which are caused by different boot and main Cisco IOS versions.
