UCS Mini Architecture, Troubleshooting and Upgrade

 

Q. What kind of appliance are supported?

A. You can connect FC storage array or IP storage

 

Q. Can I connect a storage device to FI 6234? FC or  isci?

A: Yes. We can connect the storage device directly. Check the Webcast video session for more information.

 

Q.  How about the L1-L2 ports?

 

A:  We don't have any L1-L2 ports. Please check the Webcast video session for more information.

 

Q.  The 40 GBps port in FI 6234 can only be configured in Ethernet mode?

A:  No. We can configure the regular ports 1-4 in Ethernet mode.

 

Q.  That means we can configure 2 of them in FC and two in FCOE for example?

A:  You can configure them as FCOE storage port.

 

Q.  When we update firmware, this reboot FI 6234? What happen with my servers and their applications?

A: We do this one FI-IOM at a time. Since FI-IOM is active/active for data plane. If we have configured failover on server, It would continue to have network/Lan connectivity

 

Q.  As a best practice, should we start with the servers upgrade or the infrastructure first when using the auto upgrade option ?

A:  Infrastructure firmware first and server upgrade later.

 

Q.  When do we upgrade a item (Servers), we also must to have care about other element ( FI, UCS Manager) ?

A:  Infrastructure components (FI-IOM, UCSM ) and Server components can be upgraded separately but server firmware cannot be higher than the infrastructure firmware.
 

Q.  Is there any emulator for UCS mini?

A:  Yes. Refer the following : https://communities.cisco.com/docs/DOC-53980

 

Q.  Where do we can check the compatibility or the minimum firmware that is accept ?

A:  Check the release notes for firmware 3.0.1/2 release

 

Q.  When firmware update for FI 6234 is required ? May be when we have bugs?

A:  Firmware updates can be performed for various reasons. Bug fixes, new features or requirements etc.

 

Q.  When the storage has multiple controllers the option should be multiple targets in the connection policy?

A:  Yes. If we have multiple targets.

 

Q.  Can we connect the UCS emulator to physical servers? 

A:  An emulator is software only. We cannot connect physical servers
