A Domain Name System (DNS) server runs special-purpose networking software, features a public IP address, and contains a database of network names and addresses for other Internet hosts. It also communicate with each other using private network protocols. All DNS servers are organized in a hierarchy. At the top level of the hierarchy, so-called root servers store the complete database of Internet domain names and their corresponding IP addresses.

This document explains the procedure to add a DNS Server address manually on the RVL200 VPN Routers.

Applicable Devices

• RVL200

Manual DNS Server Address Configuration

Step 1. Use the Router Configuration Utility to choose Setup > Network. The Network page opens.

Step 2. Check Use the Following DNS Server Addresses box to manually add the DNS server address.

Step 3.Enter the DNS server IP address(es) in the DNS Server field.

Note: At least one DNS Server Address needs to be entered and in most cases first available IP address is used out of the 2.

Step 4. Click either Auto or Manual in the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) field. It specifies the largest packet size permitted for network transmission.

• Auto — This option is selected by default and it allows the Router to select the best MTU for the current Internet connection.

• Manual — Enter the value from 1200 to 1500 range. Most DSL users should use the value 1492.

Step 5. Click Save settings to save the changes.
