A Log is a set of messages that describes system events. Each system event has different severity levels. The Logs can be saved locally on the RAM, flash memory of the device, on a remote log server, a USB, or sent to an email address. Logs provide an administrator an alert when a feature is not working correctly, which allows the administrator to take action to correct them. This article explains how configure log settings on the RV315W VPN Router.
The following articles contain more information for system logging on the RV315W.
• To view the logs locally on the RV315W, refer to the View Logs on the RV315W VPN Router article.
• To configure which logs are generated on the RV315W, refer to the Log Facilities on the RV315W VPN Router article.
• To configure the log for firewall events, refer to the Firewall Logs on the RV315W VPN Router article.
Step 1. Log in to the web configuration utility and choose System Management > Log > Log Settings. The Log Settings page opens:
The Local Log area is used for the administrator to define the size of the buffer of the logs that are stored locally on the RV315W.
Step 1. Enter the size (in KiloBytes) that the local buffer for logs has in the Log Buffer Size field. The buffer size determines how many logs can be saved locally on the RV315W.
Step 2. Click Save.
The USB Log area is used to save the logs on an external storage device.
Step 1. Enter a name for the file log in the File Name field.
Step 2. Enter the maximum amount of system logs for the file in the Log Size field.
Step 3. Click Save.
A syslog server can separate the software that generates messages from the system that stores and analyzes them. This saves the resources of the RV315W.
Step 1. Enter the IP address of the syslog server in the IP Address field.
Step 2 .Enter the the port used to connect with the syslog server in the Port field.
Step 3. Click Save.
The Email Notification section is used to send logs to an email, where the administrator can analyze them.
Step 1. Enter the email of the sender of the logs in the Server field.
Step 2. Enter the email of the receiver of the logs in the Receiver field.
Step 3. Enter the IP address of the SMTP server in the SMTP Server field. The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server is used to store, control, and redirect mails that host devices send.
Step 4. Enter the port number that the SMTP server uses in the SMTP Port field.
Step 5. In the Mail Subject field, enter the subject of the email that is displayed when the mail is sent.
Step 6. In the Number of Logs field, enter the number of logs that the email includes.
Step 7. In the Interval field, enter the frequency at which the logs are sent. This time is given in minutes.
Step 8. In the Username field, enter the username used to access the SMTP server.
Step 9. In the Password field, enter the password used to authenticate the access to the SMTP server.
Step 10. Click Save.
