This documents explains the procedure of interconnecting SA540 Security Appliance with 300 series Managed Switch.
The SA540 could be used as a Firewall when interconnected with the 300 series managed switch. The traffic coming from hosts connected to 300 series Managed switched could be routed through SA540. This document explains a very basic configuration for connecting hosts on 300 series managed switch through SA540.
• 300 Series Managed Switch
Step 1. Take an Ethernet cable and connect it into any of the LAN Ports on SA540. Connect the other end of this wire into any LAN Port on the 300 series Managed Switch.
Configuration Settings on SA540
Step 1. Choose Networking > LAN > IPv4 Config from the Security Appliance Configuration Utility of the SA540. The IPv4 LAN Configuration page opens.
Step 2. Choose DHCP Server option in the DHCP Mode field under DHCP area.
Step 3. Enter the Starting and Ending IP address in the respective fields. This range forms the pool of IP address which would be allocated by the DHCP server to the hosts getting connected to it.
Step 4. Enter the lease time in Lease time field. Lease time is the time for which the IP address allocated by SA540 would stay with that particular host. The unit is in hours.
Step 5. Click Apply.
Configuration Settings on 300 Managed Switch
When the SA540 and 300 series switch is powered on look for the Green System LED Located below the Cisco Logo on the device. When the LED becomes stable , it is the indication that the Switch has got IP address from the DHCP server that is set on the SA540. Now if any host is connected on any LAN Port on the 300 series Managed Switch , it would get IP Address from the SA540. So, any data of the host to access the outside network would pass through SA540.
