Although connecting APs directly into the 2106 is not the recommended way of doing (see Best practices document : https://supportforums.cisco.com/click.jspa?searchID=19323865&objectType=102&objectID=11760), you can technically do that and it can work fine.

The common question is how to provide IP address to the AP when they are directly connected.

What you need :

FIRST OPTION :

-A DHCP pool configured on the WLC and that pool to be in the subnet of the AP-manager interface.

-The AP manager interface has the management interface configured as DHCP server.

SECOND OPTION:

-A DHCP pool configured on a switch or DHCP server somewhere in the network

-The AP manager interface has the DHCP server ip configured as DHCP server

Notes :

-Even if you connect the AP to the PoE port 8 on the WLC, leave the ap manager assigned to port 1.

-If for some reason you have to disable dhcp proxy behavior on the WLC because your DHCP server doesn't like it, then it's not going to work

-You cannot plug a laptop in one of the WLC ports and expect it to get an IP address or have network connectivity.
