Nexus 7010 VSS

Does the nexus 7010 support virtual switching yet??  All of the posts I have found from about a year ago say that it is going to be supported, but there were no dates listed.     I heard the same thing from Cisco a while back, but haven't followed up with it.

If it is supported finally are there any configuration guides available for it?

Hi,

Currently VSS is only supported on the 6500 series.

Is this absolutely true? I have been researching and noticed this thread but would like verification on this.

Thanks,

It is true.  I just came back fromt a Nexus briefing and Cisco stated that they don't support VSS on Nexus as today.  However, they support VDC on Nexus.  So instead of stacking two boxes into one virtual box like what VSS does, VDC creates small virtual switches (currently 4, roadmap to 8) within N7K.

ok thanks for the clarification!!!

So with vDC we can do etherchannel over two boxes, correct?

Yes, you can.  It is no different than creating etherchannel between two physical switches.

Just a tiny correction...

You do have 2 different Nexus virtualization technologies here:

VDC - Virtual Device Contexts

vPC - Virtual Port-Channels

With VDCs, you can create contexts on the device just like firewall security contexts. You can, for example, have an Admin context where you control the whole box and runs OSPF, and a DMZ context that has no routing protocol. They have absolutely no communication between them (you need a cable for that).

If you get a pair of Nexus 7k or 5k switches, you can configure them to act as a single switch but only for port-channels - that is, you will be able to build a port-channel from a third switch to both of them. This is called a virtual port-channel - or vPC.
