Configuring Nexus (3000) for first time

Friends Faiz here,

Im configuring nexus series switch for first time. This is 10G nexus 3548 switch.

The setup is Express POD configuration. Before that I need to be familiar with the switch. Friends kindly assist me with the features of this switch.

I have three VLANs and I need nexus to be the gateway and intervlan routing.

I have two nexus switches so do I need to configure HSRP or is it like stacking? I have read about VPC.

Who ever online just help.

Yes, You need to have 3064. (VPC is not supported on the 3548).

Once you have that then IOS mentioned above to be uploaded on that box (Nexus 3064)and then use the feature of VPC.

Hope this answers your query.

Inayath.

Thanks for the reply, it was very helpfull. I shall refer it.

My actual question is , in the scenario I mentioned, do I need to configure HSRP or is there any option which makes 2 Nexus as a single switch like stacking we do on normal switches

Faisal,

In your topology yes differently you need to configure the HSRP.

else go ahed withthe best option of utlizaing the VPC.

Thanks, this was exactly what i was looking.

Virtual Port channeling (VPC) what does this option do. This is a little lack of concept from my side. Whats the difference between VPC and HSRP.. does VPC make switch as one

Yes Perfect...and also it add some more flexibility.

Does VPC support on nexus 3548, i have version version 5.0(3)A1(1).

After the command feature VPC, it gives an error

Error: vPC feature is not supported.

Is any upgrade required

VPC is not supported in the Nexus 3548 at this point. You have to use Nexus 3064s for that. These are totally two different platforms.

You need 5.0(3)U2(1) to do vPC on the 3000 series.

Try loading it and test again.

From the release notes:

Beginning with Cisco NX-OS Release 5.0(3)U2(1), the Cisco Nexus 3000 Series supports virtual port channels (vPC).
