is there a way to force the router use voip dial-peer first, then fallback to pots dial-peer in case the call fails over ip network? the document says " the pots dial-peer must have higher preference than vox dial-peer if the hunt group has mixed dial-peer". the customer wants the implementation is transparent to caller. i.e. no numbering change, no access code for LD, auto-recovery in case the ip network is down but all interfaces on the router are up.

maybe the document only means "conceptually" if the phone device is directly connected why bother to hop over ip/fr/atm. actually the following is in a sample configuration saying vofr has higher preferece than pots in a hunt group.
dial-peer voice 1 vofr
destination-pattern 22
session target Serial 0 100
preference 0
dial-peer voice 2 pots
destination-pattern 22
port 1/1
forward-digits 3
prefix 4085257
preference 1
another thought is using alt-digit, anyone knows the wildcard can be used in alt-digit now?

the answer is using pstn fallback feature provided by IOS 12.1T3.

At a recent implementation that I was involved in, pots fall-back was configured through PBX programming. If the PBX (a Nortel Option 81) detected a fast-busy when attempting to place the call through the T1 trunk to the VoIP Gateway, it would automatically re-route via a pots trunk.

I can't help noticing the subject of precedence setting on dial-peers. Can I use the same "precedence" command to bundle multiple pots together ? What is the preferred method to use if I need to cater to customer overflow if they need more than an E1 on the AS5300 ?

You can actually just put in another pots dial-peer that points to the second port. If you want to preference one over the other, then go ahead and use the preference as stated in the previous post. If you don't use a pref. the two dial-peers will basically round robin.

If you are using ISDN or Qsig signalling you can specify a failure cuase on the D-channel, and based on the cause value the call will be redirected back to the PBX to then call over the PSTN. There are list of cause codes available onthe cisco web site. The most common cause are 'no route to destination' and 'destination unreachable'
