TACACS+ and /etc/shadow

Hi. I'm trying to get Cisco's free UNIX based TACACS+ to work with the /etc/shadow file in Linux. If I manually paste the DES encrypted password from the /etc/shadow file into the /etc/tac.conf file (using the line "login = des <encrypted_passwd>"), then I can successfully authenticate using my Linux user/pass combo. However, when I change the tac.conf line to "login = file /etc/shadow", it doesn't allow me to authenticate with the same password.

Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to uninstall tac_plus and recompile it? I read something about modifying the pw.c file in the source code directory and having to recompile the software. I tried this, but I am relatively novice at things Linux, and I'm not exactly sure whether or not I need to somehow uninstall the program before recompiling it, or even how to recompile it for that matter.

Any help will be appreciated!

When it is working when manually copied, it should work; may be you can try uninstalling tac_plus and recompiling it.
