If you are not offloading SSL on ACE then you can Loadbalance it using Layer 4 info.ACE (in fact any Loadbalancer) will make the loadbalancing decisions based on IP address & Port #.
If you offload SSL on ACE then it can look into the Layer 7 headers and can make loadbalancing decisions based on header information (Header value, Cookies).
