Alteon to CSM migration

I've migrated a number of VIP's off our Alteon to our CSM, sharing the same VLAN's without any problems, normally it's just a matter of disabling the VIP's on the Alteon pasting the CSM VIP & RIP config, changing the RIP servers default GW to point to the CSM server network alias address and clearing the VIP ARP on the Supervisor (which contained the Alteon MAC). After migrating lots of them, I come across a particular issue.

Primary CSM config

vlan 147 server

ip address 10.210.145.11 255.255.255.0 alt 10.210.145.12 255.255.255.0

alias 10.210.145.2 255.255.255.0

Primary Alteon config:

/c/ip/if 147

ena

addr 10.210.145.6

mask 255.255.255.0

broad 10.210.145.255

vlan 147

/c/vrrp/vr 12

ena

vrid 1

if 147

addr 10.210.145.1

When the Real Servers change their default gateway from 10.210.145.1 (Alteon) to 10.210.145.2 (CSM alias), there are lots of icmp timeouts. Even from the 6509 router I can't ping the alias itself, again timeouts!

6509#ping 10.210.145.2

Type escape sequence to abort.

Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 10.210.145.2, timeout is 2 seconds:

...!!

Success rate is 40 percent (2/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 1/2/4 ms

When sniffing the Alteon vlan 147 port, I see the Alteon taking these ICMP packets. Why?

NB: When the server default gateway changes to the Primary CSM interface 10.210.145.11 things work.
