If there are lots of icmp packets going through , it maybe generate a lot of traffic and may cause the device to stop responding. So you might experience intermittent timeouts. Is this only happening with icmp packets ? Have you made any recent changes to your network? You could use the debug commands to troubleshoot the failures.
