Is it possible for the CSM, when doing a cookie insert - to not set any expiration ? And how would this be acheived?

set the variable COOKIE_INSERT_EXPIRATION_DATE to "".
But be aware of CSCsg18828.
This doesn't work before 4.1.9 and 4.2.6
