CSS Content rule port no.???

What does the port no in the content rule specify is it the port number of the incoming connection or the application port no. and the port number specifed in the service is the application port number

if doing only layer 3 load balancing do i need to specify port numbers on content rule or on service

Amit,

the port number under the content rule specifies the port number the CSS listen to. This the port to which the traffic is sent by the client.

The port number under the service definition is the port on the application server and the CSS will forward the traffic to this port.

ie: let's say you habe a content rule with 'port 81' and you add a service which is defined with 'port 80'. The client will send traffic to vip:81 and the CSS

will forward the traffic to real:80.

If only doing layer 3 you don't need to specify the port number.
