failover on switches

I have four switches, 2 cisco 2960 and 2 dell powerconnect 5324 that are redundant to each other. All switches have a physical connection to each other. Currently when one switch goes down I have to manually failover to the second switch. Can I do a automatic failover similar to hsrp with cisco routers. Will the automatic failover work with different switches, Dell and Cisco.

Re: failover on switches

If you have spanning-tree enabled the protocol should detect loops and also failures and automatically recover.

Spanning-tree is a standard, so as long as your Dell switches support it, that should work with Cisco.

FYI, you're not on the correct forum for switches related questions.

We deal with application level issues.

For low level network issues, you should go to the routing/switching forum.

Gilles.
