I have been throw into the position of making a solution work that I had no part in ordering the hardware for. I have 2 6509s with an ACE module with the 16GBps license and an FWSM in each. From reading the datasheets for the ACE and FWSM, I find the ACE can handle 16Gbps of throughtput and the FSWM up to 5.5Gbps. Also, the ACE can handle 4 million concurrent connections while the FWSM can only handle 1 million. My question is this. Does it even make sense to use the FWSM at all? It doesn't seem to offer any feature over the FWSM and from what I can tell, I'm going to have to use either the ACE or the FWSM in transparent mode to be able to use both of them.
