Manage Product Instance Registration Tokens in a Virtual Account of Smart Software Manager

Objective

Cisco Smart Software Licensing is a new way of thinking about licensing. It simplifies the licensing experience across the enterprise making it easier to purchase, deploy, track, and renew Cisco Software. It provides visibility into license ownership and consumption through a single, simple user interface.

With Smart Software Manager, you can organize and view your licenses in groups called virtual accounts. Product Instance Registration Tokens are used to register and consume a product for smart licensing. This is very useful in businesses wherein several administrators are managing the network.

There are three different types of Licenses that Cisco provides:

  • Term Licenses — Licenses that automatically expire after a set amount of time.
  • Perpetual Licenses — Licenses that do not expire.
  • Demo Licenses — Licenses that expire after 60 days. Demo licenses are not meant for production use.

Before registering a Smart Software License, you need to generate a product instance registration token first. A product instance is an individual device with a unique device identifier (UDI) that is registered using a product instance registration token. You can register several instances of a product with a single registration token. Each product instance can have one or more licenses that reside in the same virtual account.

Note: A registered device is not affected when a registration token expires, revoked, or removed. Essentially, the token is simply used to add the device to the corresponding smart account.

This article provides instructions on how to manage product instance registration tokens in your virtual account.

Manage Product Instance Registration Tokens

Create a Product Instance Registration Token

Important: You cannot create token for virtual accounts that belong to a satellite. You can create a registration token in the Cisco Smart Software Manager satellite for these virtual accounts.

Step 1. Using your web browser, access the Cisco Software Central page then log into your Smart Account.

Note: If you do not have an account yet, create a new one by clicking Register Now.

Step 2. In the Cisco Software Central page, choose License > Smart Software Licensing.

Note: Alternatively, you can click Smart Software Licensing under the License area.

Step 3. Click on Inventory.

Sep 4. Click the New Token button.

The Virtual Account area displays the virtual account under which the registration token will be created.

Step 5. (Optional) Enter the description of the registration token in the Description field.

Note: In this example, RV340 is used.

Step 6. In the Expire After field, enter the time limit for the token to be active up to 365 days. The default value is 30 days.

Note: In this example, 15 days is used.

Step 7. Check the Allow export-controlled functionality on the products registered with this token check box to turn On the export-controlled functionality for tokens of a product instance you wish in this virtual account. By checking the check box, you enable the tokens to use the restricted features on your product instances. You can uncheck the check box if you wish not to allow the export controlled functionality to be made available for use with this token.

Important: Use this option only if you are compliant with the export controlled functionality. Some export controlled features are restricted by the United States Department of Commerce. These features are restricted for products registered using this token when you uncheck the check box. The export controlled functionality is available for only those tokens that comply the regulations and policies of the United States Department of Commerce. Any violations are subjected to penalties and administrative charges.

Note: In this example, the export-controlled functionality is disabled.

Step 8. Click Create Token.

The created product registration token in your virtual account will be displayed in the Product Instance Registration Tokens table that contains the following details:

  • Tokens — The token ID that was generated.
  • Expiration Date — The time limit for the token to be active.
  • Description — The description of the registration token.
  • Export-Controlled — Specifies if the export controlled functionality is enabled for the generated token. This field is visible only for those smart accounts that are permitted to use this functionality.
  • Created By — The user who created the token.
  • Actions — This area allows you to copy, download, revoke, or remove a token from the Product Instance Registration Token table.

You should now have created a product registration token in your virtual account.

Manage Product Instance Registration Tokens

Step 1. In the Cisco Software Central page of your Smart Account, choose License > Smart Software Licensing.

Step 2. Click on Inventory.

Step 3. In the Product Instance Registration Tokens table, click Actions next to the token that you want to manage.

Step 4. Choose an option from the Actions drop-down list.

The options are:

  • Copy — Click this option to copy the token to your clipboard. You will receive a notification once the token has been copied to clipboard.

  • Download — Choose this option to download the token to your local drive in a text file format.

  • Revoke — Click this option to revoke the chosen token. Revoked tokens can no longer be used.

Note: In this example, Revoke is chosen.

Step 5. (Optional) To remove a revoked token, choose Actions > Remove from the Product Instance Registration Tokens table.

Note: This option only appears once the token is revoked. It is not possible to remove an active token from the Product Instance Registration Tokens table.

Step 6. (Optional) Click Remove Token to proceed.

You will receive a notification once the token has been removed.

The chosen token is now removed from the Product Instance Registration Tokens table.

You should now have managed the product registration tokens from your virtual account.
