PSTN user experiences low volume on calls with a user on an IP phone

Core Issue

The signal strength is low on egress from a Cisco IOS voice gateway or the gateway is artificially lowering it.

Resolution

The signal strength can be raised at the gateway by configuration commands.

To resolve this issue, perform these steps:

  1. Under the voice port, issue these commands:    

    voice-port 0/0

    input gain 1

    output attenuation 2

     

    The shut and no shut commands are required to accept the voice port changes.

       
  2. Change values, place test calls and adjust as needed. Decrease the output attenuation level by 1 dB after each test call until optimal volume is reached.    

  3. Check release notes for your software version and check for bugs in the Cisco Bug Toolkit.
