Tech tip: CER requirement for 3500 switch cluster

Cisco Emergency Responder (CER) uses Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) to locate phones that are connected to the switches. If CDP in not enabled on a switch, Cisco ER must use the Content Addressable Memory (CAM) table on the switch to track phones. But using the CAM table is less efficient than using CDP.

If Catalyst 3500 switch clusters are used, you must assign IP address to every switch. Cisco ER cannot work with a switch unless the switch has an IP address. This limitation does not apply to other types of switches such as 3550 or 3560, etc.

For all CER supported switches and versions, please refer Release Notes for Cisco Emergency Responder 8.5(1) http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps842/prod_release_note0900e4b181941b1f.html.
