The Cisco Unity 4.x installation fails. The message store configuration wizard displays the "Failed getting default mailbox store from directory monitor" error message

Core Issue

This error most likely occurs because the configuration table in the Cisco Unity database is empty. During Cisco Unity installation, one of the Structured Query Language (SQL) scripts did not complete.

The installation can be re-run automatically or manually run through the SQL installation scripts using c:\commserver\ConfigMgr.exe.

There are different ways to work around this issue, depending on the SQL or Microsoft SQL Desktop Edition (MSDE) setup.

The script can be run in the SQL Query Analyser, ConfigMgr or the command line, if MSDE is used. These are the three ways to perform workarounds:

  • For a workaround using ConfigMgr.exe, perform these steps:

  1. Go to \Commserver\ConfigMgr.exe. Double-click to open.

  2. When the window opens, click on the Advanced button. A warning message pops up. Click Yes to continue.

  3. Once the ConfigMgr opens, click Browse, and navigate to \Commserver\Localize\DefaultConfiguration\ENU\. Choose the
    UnityConfigurationDatabase.sql file. Click OK.

  4. Click the Run Dabase Configuration Script radio button.

  5. Click Run. When the dancing armadillo stops dancing, the script is done.

  6. Click Exit. This process takes less than five minutes.

  7. Run the message store configuration wizard.

  • For a workaround using the SQL Query Analyser, perform these steps  (SQL2k tools must be installed):

  1. Open the Query Analyser.

  2. Select UnityDB.

  3. Go to File > Open. Find the
    C:\Commserver\Localize\DefaultConfiguration\ENU\UnityConfigurationData.sql file.

  4. Select UnityConfigurationData.sql.

  5. Press Run to execute.

  6. Run the message store configuration wizard.

  • For a workaround using the command line, perform these steps (MSDE is installed and no SQL2K tools are available):

  1. Open a command prompt.

  2. CD to C:\CommServer\Localize\DefaultConfiguration\ENU\.

  3. Issue the osql -E -i UnityConfigurationData.sql command.
