Unable to install the Microsoft Windows OS 2000.4.3a on a Hewlett Packard DL320 G4, a Cisco Media Convergence Server 7825-H2, or an IBM 306M server and an error message appears.

Core Issue

The installation of the Microsoft Windows operating system (OS) 2000.4.3a fails, and the The transfer of OS image to the hard drive failed due to scratch or smudged dvd-ROM or due to hard failure within the system error message appears.

These are a few of the incidents that can cause this error message to appear:

  • The DVD media is scratched, damaged, or smudged and needs to be replaced or cleaned.

  • The Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) is not configurable. This can stem from the pre-existence of other OS types on the hard drives.

  • The RAID is in a Clearing or Verifying state rather than an expected Optimal state. This appears inconsistently.

Resolution

This issue is documented in Cisco bug ID CSCse49574.

These applicable workarounds are listed in order of difficulty:

Retry the installation with the same media.

Retry the installation with a different copy of the media.

During the Power-on Self Test (POST) of the server, the current condition of the RAID and any logical drive appears. Use the presented information in order to determine which one of these workarounds to complete:

If a logical drive exists and is in a Clearing or Verifying state:

  1. Press the F8 key when the RAID information appears during the POST in order to enter the embedded controller.

  2. Choose Array Configuration.

  3. Choose Manage Array.

  4. Choose the RAID.

  5. Observe the array status, for example, Clearing or Verifying.

  6. Press CTRL-W in order to enable Write Cache and respond to the prompts accordingly.

  7. Wait until the array status changes to Optimal. This can take a period of time, but there is an indicator for the percent complete. Press CTRL-S in order to initiate the indicator if necessary.

  8. Press the Escape key several times in order to exit the utility.

  9. Reboot the server.

  10. Continue with the installation.

If the logical drive exists and is in an Optimal or OK state:

  1. Press the F8 key when the RAID information appears during the POST in order to enter the embedded controller.

  2. Choose Array Configuration.

  3. Choose Manage Array.

  4. Choose the RAID.

  5. Press CTRL-W in order to enable Write Cache and respond to the prompts accordingly.

  6. Press the Delete key in order to remove the RAID.

  7. Confirm the deletion for both members of the array.

  8. Press the Escape key a sufficient number of times in order to access the Disk Utility menu.

  9. Choose the individual hard drives.

  10. Choose Format disk.

  11. Confirm the formatting.

  12. Wait for completion. This can take several hours.

  13. Repeat these steps in order to format the second drive.

  14. Press the Escape key several times in order to exit the utility.

  15. Reboot the server.

  16. Continue with the installation.

If a logical drive does not exist:

  1. Press the F8 key when the RAID information appears during the POST in order to enter the embedded controller.

  2. Choose Disk Utility.

  3. Choose the individual hard drives.

  4. Choose Format disk.

  5. Confirm the formatting.

  6. Wait for completion. This can take several hours.

  7. Repeat these steps in order to format the second drive.

  8. Press the Escape key several times in order to exit the utility.

  9. Reboot the server.

  10. Continue with the installation.

It is also observed that this issue occurs in the HP DL-380-G4 servers that have physical disk 2 and 3 attached to the Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) port 1 on the box and disk 0 and 1 are connected to SCSI port 2. This is known as the embedded SCSI duplex configuration in HP terminology.

The Cisco IP Telephony OS 2000.4.3 installation DVD requires that all four disks (0 - 3) be placed on SCSI port 2. In order to resolve this issue, complete these steps:

  1. Recable the server for the embedded SCSI simplex operation.

  2. Place all four drives on SCSI port 2.

This enables the install DVD to correctly configure the logical drives and the installation proceeds with no issues.

Refer the document Installation fails with the "You don't have Cisco approved hardware" error message for information on other installation related failures.
