I have customers add the last four of their SSNs for verification. Many of these numbers begin with zero. The script receives the number and reads back what they have entered. The playback does not include the zero although it does pass it and verifies it correctly against the DB. Any ideas on how to get the playback to read the leading zero?

Yep, seen that one before. Didn't have time to pursue Cisco on it, but what I did is work around it.
Tell her or him (in the IVR) that you want to read it as a credit card number.

Store the value as a string instead of an integer.
