Installing Cisco Fabric Manager on Windows




Cisco Fabric Manager is the management tool for storage networking across all Cisco SAN and unified fabrics. Cisco Fabric Manager Client is used by datacenter administrators for fabricwide provisioning and to represent the storage network topology map. Cisco Fabric Manager Web Client can be used for fabric wide federated reporting and Cisco Storage Media Encryption (SME) configuration. Cisco Fabric Manager provides centralized Cisco MDS 9000 Family and Cisco Nexus Family storage network management services, performance monitoring, federated reporting, troubleshooting tools, discovery, and configuration automation for datacenter.

Installing Fabric Manager on Windows 32-bit


The Cisco Fabric Manager software executable files reside on every supervisor module of each Cisco MDS 9000 Family switch in your network. The supervisor module provides an HTTP server that responds to browser requests and distributes the software to Windows or UNIX network management stations.


Cisco Fabric Manager has been tested with the following software:

•Operating Systems

–Windows 2000 SP4, 2003 SP2, XP SP2, Vista SP1, Server 2008 R2

–Redhat Linux 7.2

–Solaris (SPARC) 8 and 10



–Sun JRE and JDK 1.5 or 1.6 is supported

–Java Web Start 1.2 and 1.0.1



–Internet Explorer 5.5, 6.x and 7.0

–Netscape 6, Mozilla 1.0, or Firefox 2.0



Installing the Database

Before you install Fabric Manager, you must install a database. Choice of database are Oracle 10g or PostgreSQL. Follow the link to install Oracle Database 10g. . Run the following script to change the default Oracle admin port and to create a database account.

C:\> cd c:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\bin

C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\bin>sqlplus / as sysdba

SQL> exec dbms_xdb.sethttpport(8082);






Installing Fabric Manager

For switches running Cisco MDS 9000 FabricWare, install Fabric Manager from the CD-ROM included with your switch, or you can download Fabric Manager from Follow these steps in install Fabric Manager on Windows.


Step 1. Click the Install Management Software link.

Step 2. Choose Management Software > Cisco Fabric Manager.

Step 3. Click the Installing Fabric Manager link.

Step 4. Select the drive for your CD-ROM.

Step 5. Click the FM Installer link.

Step 6. Click Next to begin the installation.

Step 7. Check the I accept the terms of the License Agreement check box and click Next.

Step 8. Click the radio button for either:

a. Fabric Manager Server to install Fabric Manager Client and Fabric Manager Server.

b. Fabric Manager Standalone to only install Fabric Manager Client.

Step 9. Select an installation folder on your workstation for Fabric Manager. On Windows, the default location is C:\Program Files\Cisco Systems\MDS 9000. Click Next.

Step 10. Click the radio button for either Install PostgreSQL or Use existing database and enter a database user name and password.

Step 11. If you select Use existing database, click the radio button for PostgreSQL or Oracle.

Step 12. Click Next in the Database Options dialog box.

Step 13. Enter a user name and password and click Next.

Step 14. Choose an authentication mode (Local, RADIUS, TACACS or MDS) and click Next.

Step 15. Click Verify to test your login.

Step 16. Click Install if you are installing Fabric Manager Standalone.

Step 17. Select the local interface, web server port or fm server port and check the FC Alias and SNMPv3 check boxes as desired and click Install if you are installing Fabric Manager Server.

Step 18. Click Finish to close the Cisco Fabric Manager Installer window.



Installing Fabric manager on Windows 64-bit


Note that Cisco Fabric Manager has not been officially tested on any 64-bit platforms, only 32-bit platforms are officially supported. However users were able to install Fabric Manager on 64-bit Windows by following these steps:


Step 1. Open a command prompt (cmd.exe) as administrator. To do this right-click on cmd.exe, and select Run As Administrator. This is important.

Step 2. Change to your Java directory (i.e., "C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin"). Checked with Java version 1.6.0_18-b07.

Step 3. Run the command "Java.exe -Xmx512m -jar m9000-fm-5.0.1a.jar"  (You'll need to specify the full path to the jar file for Fabric Manager. On the CD image download, it's in the Software folder).  Your command prompt should look something like this, depending on where the Fabric Manager jar file is located:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin>Java.exe -Xmx512m -jar "C:\m9000-cd-5.0.1a\software\m9000-fm-5.0.1a.jar"

Step 4. Then just follow the steps for the install, as shown in section above.


** Note that as of NX-OS 5.2, Cisco Fabric Manager and FMS will be known as Cisco Data Center Network Manager for SAN, and is supported on both 32 bit and 64 bit Windows.
