Introduction

The UCS 6120 fabric interconnect has 20 fixed 10G small form-factor pluggable plus (SFP+) Ethernet ports. The base ports on the UCS 6100 series interconnect can be used as either uplink (network port) or downlink (server port). The uplink ports are connected to the external infrastructure and the downlink ports are connected to the fabric extenders in the UCS chassis. Note that the ports on the expansion modules can not be used as downlink ports.

UCS 6248UP fabric interconnect has 32 fixed 10G small form-factor pluggable plus (SFP+) ports and one expansion slot. UCS 6296UP fabric interconnect has 48 fixed 10G fixed small form-factor pluggable plus (SFP+) ports and three expansion slots.

Supported Expansion Modules

UCS 6100 series fabric interconnect support the following expansion modules:

The first module (N10-E0080) is a Fiber channel only module and has 8 ports for 1/2/4G FC connectivity.

The second module (N10-E0600) is Ethernet only module and has 6 ports for 10G Ethernet connectivity.

The third module (N10-E0440) supports both Fiber channel and Ethernet, and has 4 ports for 10G Ethernet connectivity and 4 ports for 1/2/4G FC connectivity.

License requirement in UCS

The UCS 6100 series fabric interconnect comes with 8 port license included. If required, additional necessary port license can be purchased. The UCS 6120 fabric interconnect also has one free slot to insert an expansion module, if you require more ports on the fabric interconnect. All of the expansion modules come with pre-installed license and thus no license is required to be purchased in case of modules. Note that you can not transfer port activation between the expansion modules and base ports on the fabric interconnect. The 10G Ethernet ports on the fabric interconnect as well as on the expansion modules also serve for FCoE (Fiber Channel over Ethernet) connectivity. The FCoE license is also included with the fabric interconnect and thus it is not required to be purchased separately.
