DMS version 5.2 DNS problems

CSCtf23155 Bug DetailsBug #1 of 38 | < Previous | Next >

DMP4305 5.2 - 1 minute playlist transition issue w/ invalid DNS.
Symptoms
In 5.2 on the DMP4305, creating a DMM playlist can cause large transition delays if the DMP is configured with an invalid DNS server, or a DNS server not able to resolve www.cisco.com

Workaround:
If the DNS server cannot lookup external addresses like cisco.com, a static entry can be added for www.cisco.com on the DNS server.
For example, adding a translation for www.cisco.com to map to a local (dummy) IP address.

I'm use method get content from webserver to play video file and use failover during webserver down. Now I'm face 2 big major problems.

Webserver also act as DNS Server.

1.     During webserver down, DMS failover is not work (as I reading it will fail only webserver return 404 to dmp but if power fail, I need to reboot DMP and failover will work)

2.     But after reboot DMP, now DMP can't resolve name,

It took 4 min for restart process

It will occur blank screen 1min during change video.

In DMP can set only 1 DNS Server at that time.

So Everyone have same problems as me and What do you doing?

Best Regards,

Sukitti L.

Re: DMS version 5.2 DNS problems

sukitti,

I am sorry that you are running into this issue.  This is a known issue

and Cisco is addressing it and will resolve in a future release.

The fix is scheduled to release in version 5.2.1 which should be out

in the June-July Timeframe.

In the mean time, One option may be to separate your DNS & Web services

so there is not a single point of failure.

Also, another thing that may be effecting the transition is the "Syslog" configuration

on the DMP.  If you are not using syslog,  make sure it is disabled or the IP address is

configured to a Valid Syslog IP address or set to the internal loopback address 127.0.0.1.

Apply configuration, Save, and reboot.  This may help the transition delay some..

They key issue here is the DNS caveat with DMP-4305s in this release which I mentioned

will be integrated in the next release.

Cheers!
