Does DMP play mp4 files?

Hi all,

We are enconding some video files using MXE (H264 profiles) to .mp4 but we can not play them either locally on the DMP(4400) or even stream them to the DMP.

Has anyone managed to play back any H264 video files on the DMP?

We are running under DMS 5.2

Thanking you all

Re: Does DMP play mp4 files?

Yes, the MXE can be used to transcode H264 to MPEG2 TS.

Cheers!

Re: Does DMP play mp4 files?

panayiotiscy,

I have done this successfully.  Just tested again and it works.

Remember, the DMPs support MPEG 4 part 10 but has to be

in a MPEG TS container.

Use the MXE Encoder Profile "DMP-4400" and it should work fine.

Re: Does DMP play mp4 files?

Hi Tomas,thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately it does not work.

I'm encoding it using the DMP4400 profile and then trying the following:

1) to play it locally on the DMP: Nothing happes for a while and then windows pops up in our LCD saying that "Bon Echo something..." is trying to open the file and there is nothing i can do.

2) uploaded in media lirbary and send it by presentation but no luck either.

What do you think??

Thank you

Re: Does DMP play mp4 files?

The "bon echo" error is a mozilla "BROWSER" error.

You need to use the "MEDIA URL" (for videos located on a Web server) or

"Play Video File Stored Locally" (for videos stored locally on DMP).

* Which Display action are you using on the DMP-DM?

* What is the INGRESS format of the video content that you are

using on the MXE to Transcode?

* Download Media Info and use this tool to get the "text" output of the

media info of the MXE transcoded file.

  http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en

Please post or attach the text output of the MXE transcoded file.  Actually,

please attach the before & after (MXE) file info.

Thanks

Re: Does DMP play mp4 files?

Hi Tomas,

I must admit that i'm always eager to receive reply from you.

Please see below for answers to your guestions:

1)

You need to use the "MEDIA URL" (for videos located on a Web server)  or

"Play Video File Stored Locally" (for videos stored locally on  DMP).

--> I did this as well but in vain.Actually, in order to be sure for the url i'm providing, i tried a .wmv file which is under the same folder as .mp4 and it is actually playing.

2)What is the INGRESS format of the video content that you are

using on the MXE to Transcode?

---> I'm using .mpg files

3)

Please post or attach the text output of the MXE transcoded file.   Actually,

please attach the before & after (MXE) file info.

---> Where can i find these output? Are they under any folder? Because i dont see and output apart from the newlcy encoded video file.

Re: Does DMP play mp4 files?

When the file is stored locally, what is the exact URL that You are using to Play?

As noted earlier, you need to download the mediainfo application utility and

then open the MPG file to get it's Media info and then repeat for the

MXE transcoded file.

* Download Media Info and use this tool to get the "text" output of the

media info of the MXE transcoded file.

Re: Does DMP play mp4 files?

Here is the URL for the locally stored video file. file:///tmp/ftproot/usb_1/Dionne.mp4

In order to be sure that i'm providing the correct URL to the DMP i tried another video file stored locally, in the same folder as the .mp4 and it was played back just fine....Weird!

Please find attached the .mpg(ingress) and .mp4 (encoded) results from mediainfo.

Thank you

Re: Does DMP play mp4 files?

The Reason why dionne.mp4 does not work is because it is not

in a MPEG TS Container.  The mpeg4 Part10 MUST be in a mpeg2 Tranport(TS)

in order to work on a DMP.  I noted this above in my first response.

This is your media info:

General

Complete name                    : C:\Users\pc\Desktop\Dionne.mp4

Format                           : MPEG-4

Format profile                   : Base Media / Version 2

Codec ID                         : mp42

What a working file has something like this:
General
ID                               : 9999
Complete name                    : /Users/tdeleon/Downloads/student-vid_DMP_4400_MXE35k.mpg
Format                           : MPEG-TS

Video
Format                           : AVC
Format/Info                      : Advanced Video Codec
Format profile                   : High@L3.2

Audio
Format                           : AAC
Format/Info                      : Advanced Audio Codec
Format version                   : Version 2
Format profile                   : LC
Notice the MPEG-TS format
You can use a Cisco MXE or VLC to transcode file(s) to create a file in the MPEG TS container..
Cheers!

Re: Does DMP play mp4 files?

Is it possible to send me your DMP4400 profile so i can load it my MXE? See if that helps ???

Thank you Thomas

Re: Does DMP play mp4 files?

MXE-3000 or MXE-3500?

I will assume 3K.

Please provide screen snapshots of the "DMP-4400" profile that you are

using.  I would like to see the H.264 Encoder Tab for the VIDEO & MULTIPLEXING side Tabs.

Thanks

Hi,

Any update one this???

Re: Does DMP play mp4 files?

Hi ,

I resume this conversation because it doesnt make any sense!!!

Since the MPEG-4 Part 10 must be is MPG-TS(.mpg) container then why does the Media Library accepts .mp4 video files to be uploaded?

What do you think?

Cisco Employee

Re: Does DMP play mp4 files?

The .mp4 is just an extension.  There is no "Media" format check for uploading files to the

media library.  The supported media types for the DMP is listed and it is the responsibility

of the Media Content Creator or Provider to ensure the media format is correct.

I agree it would be nice to have a validity check on the content format and it way be available

in the future.  But you also have to look at the potential performance hit on the appliance.

Think of Batch uploads and uploads of larger files... There could be inherent delay while

each media asset is evaluated prior to upload...

Thanks for the comments!

Re: Does DMP play mp4 files?

Hi Tomas,

So, if i'm getting this right, you mean that i can use MXE to encode any H264 video file (1080p) to MPEG-2-TS, which is  playable by the DMPs?

Thank you

Cisco Employee

Re: Does DMP play mp4 files?

Yes, the MXE can be used to transcode H264 to MPEG2 TS.
