The IronPort will not be "disabled", it will work in a strictly 'receive only' mode. The antispam and antivirus updates will cease to function, and the device will no longer be able to upgrade to the latest AsyncOS.

Re: What happened if client doesnt RENEW the License

Quite simple,

On the WEB gui click "System Administration/Feature Keys"

There is also a CLI command for it but I do not have that nearby.

If you want to monitor the number of days (or is it hours?) before expiration, you can use the XML/Status page (https://yourironporthost/xml/status) or use SNMP.

Hope this helps.

The CLI command is (appropriately) featurekey

ironport1.scratchspace.com (SERVICE)> featurekey

Module Quantity Remaining Expiration Date
Bounce Verification 1 Perpetual N/A
IronPort Anti-Spam 1 99 days Sat May 9 13:46:13 2009
Incoming Mail Handling 1 Perpetual N/A
Virus Outbreak Filters 1 99 days Sat May 9 13:46:13 2009
Sophos Anti-Virus 1 99 days Sat May 9 13:46:13 2009
McAfee 1 99 days Sat May 9 13:46:13 2009

Pending keys:
1. iYf9M-47X9I-X74vD-/qWkw-UhShk-j8ZYR-UWPzB-3rG4m-2LgbO-1Dc3F-FNoZT-wdpu2-M0dRM-mvkxP-dYm0M-=
IronPort Email Encryption, Quantity 1, Duration 9616210 seconds

Choose the operation you want to perform:
- ACTIVATE - Activate a (pending) key.
- CHECKNOW - Check now for new feature keys.

Note that the Incoming Mail Handling Key is perpetual.

The appliance will start sending you alerts 30 days before a key expires, but monitoring is still a good idea.

Will it be able to do content filter like match subject and do something?

Re: What happened if client doesnt RENEW the License

Greetings,

The filters will still function as long as the appliance is able to receive email. There is not a specific feature key that is associated  with content or message filters.

What if the Incoming Mail Handling and Bounce Verification shows expiry in 'n' days, how is this possible ?

I have noticed this on few customer boxes.

Re: What happened if client doesnt RENEW the License

Greetings,

We dont' see this much anymore as it usually only applies to a defect in older versions.

The alert was issued due to a Feature Key defect (#39008). Where a key

type of 'N' was applied to this appliance when it was running AsyncOS
6.0.0. Older versions did not support these abbreviations in key
mappings. The same key is kept as type 'N' when you upgrade. As such,
this same key will not work after you upgrade and you receive these
messages when the key expires.

These alert messages can be safely ignored and the defect will be fixed
in a future version of AsyncOS.

If you are seeing this in a newer version , above 6.x then it would be advisable to open a support ticket so we can investigate this further.

Re: What happened if client doesnt RENEW the License

Hello,

It had the expiry in older version prior to 6 however even after

upgrade to 7.1.2 the expiry date is specified against incoming mail

handling and bounce verification.

Will the box stop receiving incoming mails after the exipry date?

Re: What happened if client doesnt RENEW the License

Greetings,

If the inbound mail handling key (receiving) expires, the appliance would stop accepting traffic.  If the Bounce Verification (BV) key expires the system will still continue to process mail however the bounce verification feature will not be available and messages will not be tagged.   If the feature keys for anti-spam or anti-virus expire the system will continue to process mail and scan for viruses and or spam, but no updates will be available for those features. If a Centralized Management key expires, then CMS features become unavailable and the cluster will not be able to propagate changes.

Re: What happened if client doesnt RENEW the License

Hi,

I'm bringing this post up as I've got a question regarding the reputation filter.

Is reputation filtering part of the "Incoming Mail Handling" feature key?

In other words, our licences (AS, AV and VOF) are going to expire soon and I was wondering if the Appliance will still be checking the sender base for reputation scores?

Thanks

Arnaud

Re: What happened if client doesnt RENEW the License

Hello Arnaud,

reputation filtering is part of the receiving feature and will keep working even if the security scanners have expired. The only requirenment is a valid feature key for receiving, as they are usually perpetual on non evaluation appliances, this should be the case on most appliances.

Hope that helps,

Andreas
