Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CCIE ROUTING AND SWITCHING

Hi Maurilio,

I have started CCIE studies and just on a initial stage (just a babby). I know its a game of big people but thaught of giving a try. It may take me year or might be more to complete my theory part.

Can you please confirm if

CCIE vol 1 ...Jef Doyle

CCIE vol 2 ...Jef Doyle

CCIE LAN switching

is enough for written test or shal I go for some other books.

I know for knowledge depth these books might not be sufficient but I am more concerend regarding the written test first.

Also heard that

Internet Routing Architectures (2nd Edition), by Sam Halabi is also a very good book for BGP but is it neceaasry for written test and lab.

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CCIE ROUTING AND SWITCHING

Hi Ankur,

We all start as a 'baby' :-)...

I think that the books you mentioned, including Internet Routing Protocols - 2nd edition are very good points of reference. Keep you yes on the upcoming Cisco Press releases because it is coming a 2nd edition of the CCIE volume 1 by Doyle.

Always base your study directions in our blueprints posted at our web site.

During your preparation you will notice that some hands-on is necessary in order to understand a certain concept and then some titles as CCIE R&S Practical Studies by Solie it is also a good resource.

Hope these helps and good luck on your preparation.

Maurilio

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CCIE ROUTING AND SWITCHING

Hi Ankur,

I have also recently started preparing for CCIE r&s written. I think Doyle Vol 1 and Vol 2 would be a good choice. However, I was wondering if there are any sample test papers or set of multiple choice questions that could help us in getting more familiar with CCIE written test pattern. Can you suggest some thing on this ?

Thanks,

Ashutosh

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CCIE ROUTING AND SWITCHING

Hi Ashutosh,

Doyle's book are really excellent choices but keep your eyes on www.ciscopress.com because I believe it is coming a Doyle's Volume I 2nd edition.

There are some sample questions and sample tests from preparation sites. I don't know their samples to give you a suggestion but maybe someone from the forum will be able to help you with this.

My suggestion is that along with these books you consider to study Switching technologies per example Clark's book. Solie's books - volume I and II can also help you to build the necessary foundation to master the core content of the exam.

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CCIE ROUTING AND SWITCHING

Hi Maurilio,

It's good to have you back to the forum.

Everybody knows that the new version of the CCIE lab will drop some technologies. Can you tell us if there are new technologies to be added ?

What features sets will be used with the new 12.3 and 12.4 releases ?

Thank you,

Antonio

Silver

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CCIE ROUTING AND SWITCHING

Hi Antonio,

It is good to be back.

We are not adding any new technologies on January, 2006. The weight or points taken from ISDN and ATM sections or questions will be reallocated to other sections specially to Switching and IP routing.

As per the 12.3 and 12.4 features set we will go for the Advanced Enterprise Services images for 3725 and 3825s. During the transition replacing the 2600s and 3640s you will see for these routers Enterprise Basic and/or Enterprise Plus because of their memory limitation.

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CCIE ROUTING AND SWITCHING

Maurilio,

Any idea why they aren't going to the 2800 series (in the lab) - and are going straight to the 3800's? Thanks!! :-)

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CCIE ROUTING AND SWITCHING

Hello Wayne,

A while ago we replaced one of the routers with 3725 to have a middle range router platform. With the need to replace now the 2600s and 3600s we decided to do the same and go with 3800s series.

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CCIE ROUTING AND SWITCHING

Hi Maurilio,

I'm sure this has been asked many times, but I am not too sure of the actual answer to it yet.

Is it permissible to bring my own color markers/pens into the lab?

Also, I understand that the lab equipment is changing to 3825, my question is, will all the 6 core routers be changed to 3825s or will there be a mixture of 2600s, 3600s?

Thanks.

Silver

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CCIE ROUTING AND SWITCHING

Hello,

We usually have color pen and pencils available at our lab locations for your use, but normally it is not a problem if you bring your own color pencils.

Notebooks, paper for notes and calculators per example are items not permitted. We will provide you papers for notes and the calculator are available at your station.

We will replace the 2600s and the 3600s with 3825 and we will keep the one 3725 we have.

Maurilio

I'm sorry but this forum it is not a technical forum discussions. It is intended to clarify candidates with concerns the CCIE R&S exams.

Discussing technical details might break the NDA.

You can start researching some information at http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/cisintwk/ito_doc/lanswtch.htm http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/c3550/12225sec/3550scg/swvlan.htm#wp1200245 and http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/c3550/12225sec/3550scg/swtunnel.htm

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CCIE ROUTING AND SWITCHING

Sir,

In CCIE written exam blueprint IPv6 is mention but what about configuration of IPv6 with routing protocols , 6to4 and 4to6 tunnel? This topic are included in written exam or not ? what is scope of IPv6 in exam?

Thank in advance

Aniruddha

Silver

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CCIE ROUTING AND SWITCHING

Hi Aniruddha,

IPv6 on the written covers the basic concepts, addressing and basic configuration concepts. There is nothing on 6to4 or 4to6 tunneling for example at this time.

We will gradually add more complex concepts in the future, starting it some time middle 2006.

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CCIE ROUTING AND SWITCHING

Hi Maurillo,

Thanks, what about the Lab,as i am Planning Lab in middle of 2006.(In context of IPv6)

Silver

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CCIE ROUTING AND SWITCHING

Hi,

We started testing IPv6 basic configuration as addressing and basic IPv6 routing and the idea is to gradually add more challenge scenarios that includes more IPv6 routing, QoS, features, etc. but again we always do it in small steps.

Thinking about middle 2006 you may find a bit more that you could find today. I suggest you prepare in IPv6 on basic set up, routing protocols, features, QoS. Always base your studies on Cisco documentation and for IPv6 at http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios124/124cg/hipv6_c/index.htm as reference.

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CCIE ROUTING AND SWITCHING

Good Afternoon Maurilio,

I was just wondering, since ATM, IS-IS, ISDN, PPPoE, and DLSw have been removed from the written exam, is there any plan to add more questions to the pool the exam pulls from? And if so, is there any plans for releasing a Beta Exam?

Also, do you know of anything in the works for a Second Edition for the Cisco LAN Switching Book (Clark, 1999) in the next couple of months?

Thanks in advance.

Silver

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CCIE ROUTING AND SWITCHING

Good afternoon,

We don't have plans to release a Beta exam. We will remove all questions related to these content but there is no need to build a beta exam.

I'll suggest you to contact Cisco Press regarding the book because I really don't know. Cisco Press is committed to keep the books up-to-date.

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CCIE ROUTING AND SWITCHING

Hi Maurilio,

I would like to start the CCIE R&S studies , I just finished my CCNP .Since wireless is also one of the exam topics would it be a good idea to first go for the wireless specialization and then for the CCIE ?

It is a lot of information , so my plan was take the several small steps ( wireless, Qos,bgp exams ) and then go for the CCIE ...

Thx

Wim

Silver

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CCIE ROUTING AND SWITCHING

Hi Wim,

You achieved a big step towards the CCIE R&S getting the CCNP.

I think you don't need to go to a Wireless specialization for the CCIE R&S. Of course be a Wireless specialist is very good for you in terms of career nowadays.

The core of the CCIE R&S is Switching and IP Routing, them I'd say you should start focus on these two areas.

Then come QoS, Multicast, Security (basic), IOS Features that are other ares to explore.

We have Wireless content only in the written exam.

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CCIE ROUTING AND SWITCHING

Hi Maurilio,

thx for the previous answer ,I've been checking the books which exist for CCIE .

It seems that everybody starts with the books of Jeff Doyle but then you have another 7 books , (troubleshooting remote access, ip ospf ,bgp4... ).

Do you need to study all these books for the written exam or are they for the lab exam ?

A total different question : Do you know the salary difference between a ccie and a ccnp ? I found some salaries but they're for the US and not europe .Gaining the knowledge is a challenge but the money is also important ....

Silver

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CCIE ROUTING AND SWITCHING

Hi Wim,

A good start in my opinion will be with Doyle's books, Internet Protocols 2nd edition, Switching by Clark and Solie's books. Once going through them following the blueprint you will see what areas we need to extend the studies or to go deeper, then you may need other references.

Don't forget that you have an excellent source of information on Cisco documentation: www.cisco.com/univercd/home/home.htm

Regarding salary it is a fact the CCIEs get a respect from the industry because of the level of expertise and so the average salary is also higher. This happens worldwide but this also depends on country policies and labor laws and on company’s total compensation and benefits package. But for sure it is worth all the energy spent to achieve the CCIE certification.

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CCIE ROUTING AND SWITCHING

Hi Maurilio,

Can you please confirm that we do not need to worry about 12.3, 12.3T or 12.4 new features if we are taking the lab exam after January 2006 ?

I have a lab with 2500s and 2600s running 12.3(15a) IP Plus and Enterprise Basic. Do you think this is good enough to prepare or should i have routers that support 12.3 Enterprise Plus ? I just want to be sure that i won't miss any feature but i guess this is not possible with my lab.

Thank you,

Antonio

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CCIE ROUTING AND SWITCHING

Hi Antonio,

I think you are good with the gear and code you have in order to prepare taking the exam after January 2006.

When we change IOS we first want to make sure that basic and most common features will be ok running our exams. Only after that we start testing new features from the new code.

As per the IOS code changes starting January 2006 I will say that you can expect new features to start being tested after middle 2006. But it is also goes gradually as always.

Regards,

Maurilio
