Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CISCO CABLE MODEM TERMINATION SYSTEM (CMTS)

What are the major differences between DOCSIS 1.0 and DOCSIS 1.1?

Cisco Employee

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CISCO CABLE MODEM TERMINATION SYSTEM (CMTS)

The major difference between DOCSIS 1.0 and DOCSIS 1.1 is that DOCSIS 1.0 uses Service ID (SID) to identify cable modems and the devices behind them, while DOCSIS 1.1 uses service flows. DOCSIS 1.1 also has improved MAC framing features, improved provisioning, and authorization with advanced Baseline Privacy Interface Plus (BPI+ ) features.

Service flows are the fundamental units in DOCSIS 1.1 for QoS provisioning. DOCSIS 1.1 allows multiple service flows per cable modem. This means that different types of traffic, such as data, voice, and video, can be separately identified on the same cable modem. This separate identity provides specialized QoS treatment as per traffic needs.

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CISCO CABLE MODEM TERMINATION SYSTEM (CMTS)

We have seen this issue and there is a DDTS CSCsr74034 opened for the same. That issue has been reported on MC5x20H card. Here are the workarounds for a fix for this issue until we have IOS fix.

There are two workarounds for ironbus link status

1. Use Active PRE2 in slot B

2. Do not use a MC520H in slot 5/0

Note : This is not a hardare problem with the card so please do not request for RMA for any equipment due to the ironbus error.

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CISCO CABLE MODEM TERMINATION SYSTEM (CMTS)

That DDTS has not been resolved yet. So we have to live with those healthy workarounds at the moment. You can monitor that bug and, once its resolved, you can download the ios version which has a fix.

With the workaround in place, there should not be any impact on cable customers.

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CISCO CABLE MODEM TERMINATION SYSTEM (CMTS)

This error will not damage the linecard at all and if you use the workaround mentioned, you will not see that error at all.

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CISCO CABLE MODEM TERMINATION SYSTEM (CMTS)

Hi Tejal, is there a solution to load-balance between the two uplink Gig Eth in the CMTS? We're running OSPF in the cmts and no bgp. Thx

Cisco Employee

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CISCO CABLE MODEM TERMINATION SYSTEM (CMTS)

OSPF will allow you to load balance between two equal cost links so use that as a plan.

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CISCO CABLE MODEM TERMINATION SYSTEM (CMTS)

Hi, is the cmts enabled "cef" by default? how do i check it and should I turn "cef" on globally in order to implement the two uplink gig eth load-balancing? thx.

Cisco Employee

Re: ASK THE EXPERT - CISCO CABLE MODEM TERMINATION SYSTEM (CMTS)

Cef is enabled on CMTS by default and to check it , you need to issue "show ip cef" command.
