You should connect to the ASA OOB port for ASDM. ASDM will manage the IPS software on the SSM while ASDM is running connected to the ASA OOB port. In short, use ASDM to the OOB port on the ASA, click on the IPS link, then accept (or change if needed) the IP address of the SSM at the dialog box.
