Can Pix 501 be upgraded

I have a pix 501 running IOS 6.3(5) and Device manager 3.0(4). Is it possible to upgrade the software and is it wise to do? Thanks Bob

Hi Rob, unfortunately you cannot upgrade passed 6.3.5 last version in the 6.3 train for this model..

if you want to upgrade to code 7.x above you will neeed to upgrade to asa, asa5505 would be its upgrade path model.

Bob, there are quite lots of new features in the new breed of cisco firewalls to list but one that cames to mind SSL WebVPN, SSL Annyconnect, at least for the asa5505 supports up to 20 VLANS with sec plust license.. the 501 I believe can only support up to 2 logical interfaces or 2 VLANS.. PIX cannot do SSL webvpn of any kind.. now the asa5505 counts with a slot for installing content filtering or IPS module at additional cost of course.. these PIX501 cannot have.
