Since active/active works in multiple context mode. i was trying to configure one firewall as primary but i was not able to provide ip address for the interfaces. The command is not getting recognised the moment i changed the mode to multiple.

When you initially connect to the ASA in multiple context mode you will be in system execution space. You cannot assign IP addresses here. You need to change to the relevant context.
