device throughput ?

Hi Netpro Team,

In pix/asa I would like to know how to calculate the throughput of a device from the output of show interface/show traffic with example. This will be helpful while troubleshooting the high cpu or high memory usage in firewalls...

device throughput ?

Hello,

You can do it like this:

with the "show traffic" output

on the: Aggregated Traffic on Physical Interface

grab the receive pkts/sec plus the transmited pkts/sec of all the physical interfaces.

The hole result divide it by 1024 to get kilobytes and then divide it again by 1024 to get megabytes/sec.

The check the result with the comparizon chart:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6120/prod_models_comparison.html

let me know if this answer your question

device throughput ?

Hi, it was helpful and i have rated it. This output has to be checked during peak hrs right ? If the firewall has sub interfaces, should we check that as well or only physical interfaces

Hi Alejands / Cisco Team,I

Hi Alejands / Cisco Team,

I have one more doubt, do I have to clear the interface statistcis "clear traffic" and then take the output of "show traffic" or its to take without clearing the traffic.

Below chart displays the throughput calculated without clearing the traffic rates - clear interfaces.

And this shows that ASA 5540 supports upto 650Mbps.
As per the calculation, 1 min average is 930 Mbps and 5 mins average is 765 Mbps -  all calculated in bits per second.

Please confirm on this.
