Does the ASA 5512-X have DHCP functionality

Currently my company IT Director is looking at some barracuda firewalls so replace this awful NetGear ProSafe device....I want to go the ASA Route and was wondering if these have or can have DHCP functionality.

We have 4 Vlans/Subnets supporting around 1000 People and the 5512-X looked like a great fit if it can act as a gateway for them and give basic router functionality...esspecially seeing as I am Cisco Bias'd =).

Thank in advanced and also I did check the data sheets I could find and could not find a reference to it....so I am unsure.

Does the ASA 5512-X have DHCP functionality

Hi,

The new ASA5500-X Series have the same DHCP functionality to my understanding than any of the older ASA firewall models.

They only provide the very basic options when acting as DHCP server so they are good only for very basic DHCP setups.

Also you have to consider the following limitations atleast

  • Only one DHCP Pool per named interface
  • Max DHCP Pool size equal to /24 network
  • ASA can only act as a DHCP server to a directly connected network so if you are relaying DHCP requests from another networking device then this to my understanding doesnt work

I just checked the configuration guide about the limitations but for some reason it didnt list the first 2 section which I would consider pretty much a limitation

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa84/configuration/guide/basic_dhcp.html#wp1125277

Though the Command Reference document lists information about the pool size atleast

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/command-reference/d6.html#wp1994059

Hope this helps
