Need new firewall; ASA 5505 or ?

I have an old computer running pfsense, talked boss in buying an applicance.  My concerns regarding the ASA 5505 is that it is older, and EOL could be announced at any time.  And, the fact that AIP SSC has already been announced to be EOL, or End Of Sales, anyway, makes me think they're on the verge of discontinuing the ASA 5505.  And no wireless, 150 Mbps througput, Fast ethernet, which is not a deal breaker by any means.

While it's my understanding could still have 3 years or so of support left after that (correct me if I'm wrong), still, I'd have egg on my face if bought today and EOL was announced next week.  Small office, 15 users (so have to buy the 50 user bundle), couple of VPN users, at the present time.  No exchange, web host, etc.

Any comments on the ASA 5505?

(I had originally posted this question with references to the the other Brand/model I was considering, but thought later that it might be considered a no-no to talk about other brands)

Thanks, Steve

Hello Steve,

I would rather consider the size of the network you are preparing to protect with an ASA 5505.

The ASA 5505 has some limitations as you have pointed out in regards to the new ASA-X family but it's still a great security firewall and the best of all the price.

I mean on amazon you could get it for just $250.

You are able to run the latest code, etc, etc.

Of course if your plan is to run an IPS module on it I would not recommend it but still think about it

Thanks, if you buy from Amazon, can you then buy the Smartnet support from Cisco?

Steve

Hello,

Yes, I do not see a problem with that.
