I am trying to setup a Cisco ASA 5512 in a lab for a proof of concept. The software version is 8.6(1)2.Any advice would be much appreciated.

The outside interface can ping the gateway but the inside can not:

Airfield1# ping outside 1.1.1.3

Type escape sequence to abort.

Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 1.1.1.3, timeout is 2 seconds:

!!!!!

Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 1/2/10 ms

Airfield1# ping inside 1.1.1.4

Type escape sequence to abort.

Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 1.1.1.4, timeout is 2 seconds:

?????

Success rate is 0 percent (0/5)

The configuration is as follows:

Airfield1# sh run

Hi Mathew,

The ASA as a security device will not allow you to ping  a distant interface....

What is a distant interface?

As  an example imagine you are on a host behind the inside interface.. You  will be able to ping the inside interface but you wil NOT be able to  ping the DMZ or outside interface... This because they are distant  interface for the inside host..

There is nothing you can do to change that behavior, this is done as a security meassure by the ASA ( Built-in feature)

By design, Cisco does not allow pinging cross interfaces like that.

According to Cisco's own documentation...

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa71/configuration/guide/trouble.html

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa71/configuration/guide/trouble.html#wp1059645

"For  security purposes the security appliance does not support far-end  interface ping, that is pinging the IP address of the outside interface  from the inside network."

Please rate.

Thank you sachinga. I was able to ping across the VPN between hosts. So it looks good.
