Personally I'd go with the least cost ASA I could find as opposed to a Pix. While a Pix will allow one to develop and practice basic firewall concepts, the platform is long past end of sales and no one is building new networks using Pix firewalls. The commands and techniques on an ASA will be more applicable in most network / security engineering roles.
