I am going to purchase a Cisco ASA5510. What what is the recommeded training course for configuring the ASA for firewall? It looked like the SNPA focused quite a bit on VPN

I took the former PIX exam (6.3) version a couple years ago. I'm currently studying for ccie sec. lab and using the 7.2(2) Config Guide as one of my sources.

you're going to get a lot of vpn coverage with any asa course/text that you pick up.
I say download the pdf manual from CCO.

Did you take any formal training or did you just read the user guide? Also, are you just using yours as a firewall only?
