upgrading IOS on ASA from 7.0.7 to 7.2

I have an ASA 5540 and I'd like to see about upgrading the IOS on it to 7.2. Would there be any issues with that or is it a simple upgrade?

I actually have 2 ASAs 5540 configured in failover mode. How should I do the upgrade?

Re: upgrading IOS on ASA from 7.0.7 to 7.2

Hi,

To perform this upgrade, you'll want to follow this path for a zero-downtime upgrade:

7.0(7) --> 7.1(2)

7.1(2) --> 7.2(4)

Also, here is the documentation for upgrading failover pairs:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa70/configuration/guide/mswlicfg.html#wp1056373

Basically, you'll want to do the following:

1. Load 7.1(2) on both units

2. Reload the Standby unit

3. Issue a 'no failover active' on the Active unit. This will cause the Standby unit running 7.1(2) to become Active.

4. Reload the new Standby unit (running 7.0(7)).

5. Repeat steps 1-4 for ASA 7.2(4).

Hope that helps.

-Mike
