I upgraded my pix os from 6.3 to 8, before I used to use the web user interface which now no longer works with the new IOS. I was told that the ASDM will work with the latest IOS for Cisco Pix 515e but I have not been able to find the right download in the cisco site. Can anybody point me in the right direction ?

you need asdm-603.bin

why does it have a "bin" extension ? I thought this would install on a server and access the pix via browser ?

You can find the download page listed here.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6121/index.html
If you installed pix803.bin you need to download asdm-603.bin, pix 802.bin you need asdm-602.bin and so on.

That is the way it is now on any 7.x and above, you can either load it via plain browser or install a small client called Cisco ASDM Launcher which is pooled from the pix/ASA when you first https to the firewall.

so the "bin" file I have to load it into the pix itself ?
Where do I get the launcher ?

Yes,
when you download it and tftp it to the pix
you need to tell pix to where it is.
via cli
asdm image disk0:/asdm-603.bin , this statement is for asa5505 replace disk0 to flash name for pix515.
when you https://PIX_IP follow instructions, it is all there explained and small client is pooled from pix itself asdm and install in your pc.
