Alternate Pool: I/O Free: 31268 Cause: Not enough free memory

Hi there, just purchased some cisco kit - 2 x Cisco 2501 Ethernet Dual Serial Router 16mb Flash / 16mb Dram / IP Plus 12.3 IOS. I've been working through configuring the ports, serial link and passwords etc... On some occassions when running a show running-config i see some memory errors... see below...

From what i can see the router is running out of memory and i'm not sure why? heres my 'show version' output.. It seems i have 32K on NVRAM, is this normal? if anyone could shed any light on this that would be great. Thanks! Garry

Re: Alternate Pool: I/O Free: 31268 Cause: Not enough free memor

Just looking at my post again. According to the output my current config is 731 bytes and my NVRAM has 32K so i dont see any problems there. It seems RAM is exceeding it limit (i think) Does anybody have any ideas how I confirm this? Thanks,

Garry

Found some useful commands below which i'm going to work with... hopefully, this should put me on the right tracks.

Hi Sushil, thanks for the document! I did have a read through this yesterday, didn't get to far :-(. I've just been using the kit as a lab, the memory issue only occurs from time to time, not very often.

Hi.

Don't get me wrong, but if I look at the "show version" I can see:

>cisco 2500 (68030) processor (revision M) with 6144K/2048K bytes of memory.

So your router has only 8 MB RAM, right?

Regards

Frank

Re: Alternate Pool: I/O Free: 31268 Cause: Not enough free memor

Hi,

I guess Frank is correct. The available RAM is 8 MB while what is required for the image you are running is 16 MB.

Plus, the IOS version which you are running 12.3.17a is a deferred release.

So you have two options either upgrade the RAM [I am not sure need to check more on this part] or to run some other IOS release which needs 8 MB Flash.

Re: Alternate Pool: I/O Free: 31268 Cause: Not enough free memor

Frank, Sushil, thanks for the posts! I sent my seller some outputs of 'show memory', 'show version' and straight away then identified what you guys just quoted! not enough memory! They are sending me a 16DRAM module. Should be here tomorrow! :-) I'm still learning otherwise i would of expected to see this straight away. Goy my CCENT in 3 weeks. Thanks again!

Garry
