I am new to IOS upgrades and need some help. I have attempted to upgrade a Catalyst 2912XL. I download this .tar file c2900xl-c3h2s-tar.120-5.WC15.tar. I loaded the file but got error "The system is unable to boot automatically". I thought the file was incorrect so i download a different version file c2900xl-c3h2s-mz.120-5.WC11.bin. I deleted the .tar my IOS .bin file and now my switch seems to be stuck in ROMMON. I copied a new .bin file from flash and copied over the .bin file using Xmodem then rebooted However, I?m still getting the following output when attempting to boot the switch.

" Boot Sector Filesystem (bs:) installed, fsid: 3

Parameter Block Filesystem (pb:) installed, fsid: 4

Loading "flash:c2900xl-c3h2s-tar.120-5.WC15.bin"...flash:c2900xl-c3h2s-tar.120-5

.WC15.bin: no such file or directory

Error loading "flash:c2900xl-c3h2s-tar.120-5.WC15.bin"

Interrupt within 5 seconds to abort boot process.

Boot process failed...

The system is unable to boot automatically. The BOOT

environment variable needs to be set to a bootable

image."

Why is it still looking for the .tar file?

rommon 1>boot flash:c2900xl-c3h2s-mz.120-5.WC15.bin

and look for the string "boot system" in startup-config

if i run the command show statup-config i don?t see anything that lists "boot system" is this the correct command to verify this?

i went into config t and typed

boot system command c2900xl-c3h2s-mz.120-5.WC15.bin

saved to startup-config and reloaded

now im getting

Loading "system"...system: permission denied

ran a write erase command but still same issues.

This is what i have in flash

Directory of flash:/

Hi Bill

Please, try this recovery procedure:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps607/products_tech_note09186a0080094955.shtml

From ROMMON, try:

boot flash:c2900xl-c3h2s-mz.120-5.WC11.bin

Hope this helps

I followed the instructions in the article but still having the same issues.

Ran the command dir flash:

I dont seem to see the config.text would this be related to my issues

here is what i get

You have to repeat Xmodem transfer. IOS image is corrupted(size does not match)

Can i just del everything from flash and copy over the .tar file or do i have to copy just the .bin?

Ok....I finally figured it out. I copied just the bin file in rommon using xmodem and then deleted the bin once i got to privileged mode then used tftp to extract the .tar file.

Thanks!
